Tricks of the Trade

American Fence Rental has their pulse on the construction site security industry. Because of their fourteen state service area, they have a collective knowledge of what is going on in the industry and in the Midwest construction market. Here are three trends they have noticed across the industry:

  • Architects are no longer requiring “site security fencing,” but are stating within the general conditions that “The contractor adequately secure the site against vandalism and theft and ensure public safety.” This has a lot of contractors confused about whether or not to provide temporary security fencing. It is not until there is an unfortunate incident or theft that owners and architects are declaring that the contractor failed to meet the general condition for site security. As a result, contractors are being held responsible for any costs and delays to meet project deadlines. Don’t misinterpret this new construction language to mean that temporary site security fencing is not required. This new language is a broader more stringent statement to contractors to provide more broad-based security measures including on-site security personnel, cameras, site security fencing and monitored services.
  • There has been a huge uptick in motion detection and site security cameras across the construction industry. This is in large part due to the ease of installation, maintenance and cost of this equipment. There are several multi-camera systems that can connect to site Wi-Fi. These systems run on an easy to download and use handheld device apps. Most of these systems can be purchased for a few hundred dollars and installed in mere minutes. Better yet, many of these systems come with motion detection that sends an alert to your phone and activates the camera. Best of all, many of these systems offer cloud storage for recording time lapse footage of the past hours’, days’ and weeks’ events.
  • Make sure you don’t forget the “This site has video surveillance” signage. Cameras and motion detectors are great but the ultimate intent is to prevent theft and trespassing. Install proper signage along your site security fencing every 100 feet to let others know your site is not a good target. The vast majority of the construction site break-ins don’t occur at the main gate but at the rear of the property. These signs are inexpensive and send a strong, clear message.
